'Magic' Configurations of Three-Qubit Observables and Geometric Hyperplanes of the Smallest Split Cayley Hexagon

Recently Waegell and Aravind [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012), 405301, 13 pages] have given a number of distinct sets of three-qubit observables, each furnishing a proof of the Kochen-Specker theorem. Here it is demonstrated that two of these sets/configurations, namely the $18_{2} - 12_{3}$ and $2_{4}14_{2} - 4_{3}6_{4}$ ones, can uniquely be extended into geometric hyperplanes of the split Cayley hexagon of order two, namely into those of types ${\cal V}_{22}(37; 0, 12, 15, 10)$ and ${\cal V}_{4}(49; 0, 0, 21, 28)$ in the classification of Frohardt and Johnson [Comm. Algebra 22 (1994), 773-797]. Moreover, employing an automorphism of order seven of the hexagon, six more replicas of either of the two configurations are obtained

Distinguished three-qubit 'magicity' via automorphisms of the split Cayley hexagon

Disregarding the identity, the remaining 63 elements of the generalized three-qubit Pauli group are found to contain 12096 distinct copies of Mermin's magic pentagram. Remarkably, 12096 is also the number of automorphisms of the smallest split Cayley hexagon. We give a few solid arguments showing that this may not be a mere coincidence. These arguments are mainly tied to the structure of certain types of geometric hyperplanes of the hexagon. It is further demonstrated that also an (18_{2}, 12_{3})-type of magic configurations, recently proposed by Waegell and Aravind (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012) 405301), seems to be intricately linked with automorphisms of the hexagon. Finally, the entanglement properties exhibited by edges of both pentagrams and these particular Waegell-Aravind configurations are addressed.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 5 table

Surgical treatment of inguinal hernia: Our experience

Aim: In present retrospective analysis, we aimed to evaluate the treatment results of subjects with inguinal hernia whom underwent surgical repair. Methods: Surgical treatment of inguinal hernia for last 7 years have been retrospectively analyzed. Surgical procedures include anterior mesh, posterior mesh, Mc Vay, non-mesh repair, plug mesh. Results: A total of 2320 patients underwent hernia surgery were included to the study. While, 2224 of the cases were elective procedures while 96 were operated in emergency conditions. Incarceration 78 of emergent cases were incarcerated and 18 were strangulated. Patients requiring emergency surgery were significantly older than the patients underwent elective hernia repair. Duration of hospital stay was significantly longer in emergent cases compared to elective cases. Need for intestinal resection was more common in emergent cases compared to elective surgery cases. Mc Vay and plug mesh procedures were more commonly used in emergent cases compared to elective surgery cases. Intestinal laceration and development of recurrences were more common in emergent surgery cases compared to elective surgery. Conclusion: Inguinal hernia patients should be scheduled for elective surgery without delay since need for emergent surgery may increase by time and emergent cases are associated with more complications and surgical morbidity

The band spectrum of periodic potentials with PT-symmetry

A real band condition is shown to exist for one dimensional periodic complex non-hermitian potentials exhibiting PT-symmetry. We use an exactly solvable ultralocal periodic potential to obtain the band structure and discuss some spectral features of the model, specially those concerning the role of the imaginary parameters of the couplings. Electronic state spectroscopy of C₂Cl₄

The VUV spectrum of C2Cl4 is reported in the energy range 3.8-10.8 eV (325-115 nm). Several photoabsorption features are observed for the first time, including a very weak low-lying band which is provisionally attributed to a π → π* triplet transition. Recent ab initio calculations of the molecule’s electronic transitions [Arulmozhiraja et al. J. Chem. Phys. 129 (2008) 174506] provide the basis for the present assignments below 8.5 eV. An extended ndπ series is proposed to account for several higher-energy Rydberg bands. The identification of vibrational structure, dominated by symmetric C=C and CCl2 stretching in excitations from the HOMO, largely agrees with previous spectroscopic studies. The present absolute photoabsorption cross sections cover a wider energy range than the previous measurements and are used to calculate UV photolysis lifetimes of this aeronomic molecule at altitudes between 20 and 50 km
